CONTEXT

CONTEXT

The AMANDA film takes place during the protests that broke out in early October 2019 in Chile.

In addition to the contingent cause of the increase in the price of transport tickets,

the reasons are to be found in the difficult transition from the period of the Pinochet dictatorship

to the apparent democracy of the beginning of the protests.

In fact, in its recent history, Chile has experienced a period of strong economic development.

Unfortunately, this created strong inequalities

and has left large sections of the population behind and on the sidelines.

This went on without ever taking into account the native minorities, who see the attribution of the land

as primary importance as long as they consider it to be their property

from the attempted colonization of the Spaniards in the late 15th century.

On 18 October, the President of Chile Sebastián Piñera announced a state of emergency,

authorizing the deployment of the chilean army forces in the main regions to enforce order and repress

the destruction and disfigurement of public property, and invoked in front of the courts

the Ley de Seguridad del Estado ("State Security Law") against dozens of detainees.

On 19 October in Santiago, for the first time since 1987 and since the fall of the dictatorial regime of Pinochet, a state of emergency was called with a curfew and the limitation of freedoms.

The harsh police response has resulted in a high number of injuries and arrests all over across the country.

On 25 October 2019, one of the largest peaceful demonstrations in South America takes place in

the city of Santiago, where more than one million chileans of all social classes and ages will partecipate.

Following these events, the chilean people decide, through a referendum, to change the old constitution

drawn up in 1980 by the Pinochet military junta.

On 19 December 2021, 48 years after the death of Salvador Allende,

the Chilean people re-elect a left-wing president

Gabriel Boric
