SALMONERA
SALMON FARMING
Salmon are sentient animals that can feel emotions, pain and suffering.
The salmon industry in southern Chile is causing damage to valuable ecosystems.
Various studies confirm the high environmental impact of salmon farming caused
by the excessive use of antibiotics ( 500 times more than that used in other countries ),
affecting local biodiversity.
The use of chemicals for the treatment of salmon lice, the contribution of nutrients released through food such as phosphorus, nitrates and ammonium
contributes to producing a large amount of sewage
which represents a great threat to the entire ecosystem.
The paradox is that one fifth of the world's annual wild catch is taken from the sea
for the production of feed for intensive farming.
Furthermore, salmon farming poses a risk to the traditional fishing activities carried out
by native communities and indigenous people.

ARTISANAL FISHING
Artisanal fishing is fishing practiced with boats of less than 12 meters in length, which operate within 12 miles of the coast or ,in the case of Chilean Patagonia, within the countless archipelagos.
It is a type of fishing that should always be practiced with techniques suitable for marine habitats, which do not damage the seabed and which avoid waste,
accidental catches and discards as much as possible.
Small-scale artisanal fishing gear is selective as it allows you to capture only specific target species
of the desired size.
Generally, this type of fishing respects the natural limits of the sea, following sustainable management criteria, either for the legislation to which it is subject,
or (for example if these rules were absent or insufficient), for the traditions and customs of the trade and rules that they have established themselves,
as well as for the relative limitations of the means.
The size of the boats in fact limits this fishing to a modest distance from the port of residence
(usually you go out fishing and return within the day) making the adoption of behaviors and measures to protect fish resources a necessity.
Once the sea they live on has been destroyed, these fishermen cannot go "elsewhere" like the large fishing boats do.
